Frivolous lawsuits threaten a pastime
The Baltimore Sun, July 31, 2006

I applaud The Sun’s article “Fewer willing to take the plunge” (July 23) for calling attention to the disappearance of diving boards at Maryland pools because of frivolous lawsuits and fears of litigation. Here again, litigation has run amuck at a personal cost to us. But the loss of a treasured pastime is just one of the costs we all experience because of lawsuit abuse.

Frivolous lawsuits increase the prices we pay for goods and services and threaten the economy in Maryland.

Neighborhood businesses and even larger employers can close down or experience layoffs as a result of abusive claims.

Even worse, real cases of injury are pushed down the dockets while these frivolous suits clog up our judicial system.

Diving boards are just one casualty of abusive litigation.
