Time to put an end to lawsuit abuse
The Baltimore Examiner Newspaper, The Examiner, July 12, 2006

I wish to applaud Kurt L. Schmoke’s July 6 article (“Tort reform for a healthy Baltimore and Maryland”) for its timely alarm to a growing problem.

Lawsuit abuse has a devastating effect on communities in Maryland, particularly in Baltimore.

Frivolous lawsuits raise malpractice insurance rates for doctors, increasing the cost of medical services for patients. Even worse, doctors are forced to leave our area to find other, less litigious communities in which to work.

Small businesses move or close down because they no longer can afford to operate under the constant threat of lawsuits.

Schmoke and public officials who raise their voices about lawsuit abuse should be congratulated for shining a light on this important issue. ItŐs time we all declare zero tolerance on lawsuit abuse and put an end to frivolous lawsuits.
